Title: The Disappearing

Medium:  VCR tape

Date of work: 2018

Dimensions: 134” x 87” x 87”

Description:

The Earth system has now entered the Anthropocene, a geological age in which plantation monocultures, pollution, and industrial-scale resource extraction activities are damaging or destroying vital ecological systems on which the planet and its biological diversity depend. Mourning the loss of old growth forests, Jill Sampson’s installation is created in response to the sixth mass extinction event currently unfolding. This installation of a “ghost tree” is sculpted from VCR tape created from captured images preserved through obsolete technology. Designed to hang from the ceiling of the gallery, its top structure is supported with a bamboo ring and its base weighted with small sand bags, surrounded by moving and still imagery, thus blurring the lines of past and present.
